Stainless steel mesh strainer are used for basic filtration to stop larger debris from entering pipe work when the water supply is from a non-clean source i.e. lakes and rivers. Usually combined with a non-return valve to create a Foot Valve this will also stop water from draining back to the supply and potentially loss of prime with a pump/pump set.
